Without the volunteers the Red Cross would cease to exist, says branch president Sainimili Davelevu.

The Fiji Red Cross branch in Labasa, for the first time, dedicated a night to their hardworking volunteers.

Branch president Sainimili Davelevu said on Saturday the night was intended to appreciate the efforts made by the volunteers in their service to the people.

“My heart always goes out to the volunteers because they are the very backbones of this organisation. They have passion to help the vulnerable and they are always ready to hear the call when they are needed,” Ms Davelevu said.

“Without the volunteers the Red Cross would cease to exist. Volunteers are unique, they are able to give their time, use their talents for this work.”

She said it was the undying passion to commit themselves for the greater good which enabled individuals to carry out works as such.

Chief guest Umesh Chand, who is also a volunteer, said the work volunteers continued to do was not always easy.

While people hardly appreciate them, Mr Chand said these volunteers continued to power through.

“But they do not know how it important it is when somebody needs help and we are there at their door,” Mr Chand said.

“That is the time when we have a score of 100/100. It is a very encouraging and rewarding work to be a volunteer.”

About 30 volunteers were present at the Scouts Hall in Labasa for the awards night.
