The container vessel Maipo River has been in unloading clinker in the country for over month.

For Pacific Cement Limited (PCL) this is a very costly exercise that it was beyond their control especially when they are paying an $11,000 per daay fine to the owners of the vessel.

PCL spokesman Sowani Tuidrola admitted that they had been facing difficulties which were beyond their control in the unloading.

He said when the vessel arrived into the country early this month, the clinker should have been unloaded within seven days and after that they had to pay an $11,000 penalty per day.

Mr Tuidrola said the clinker unload would continue.

Difficulties beyond the control of Pacific Cement Limited are causing the delay of the unloading of clinker at Lami Bay to the factory.

Company spokesman Sowani Tuidrola said as of Monday this week, the unloading was over a month and it was still ongoing.

He said the causes of the delay were out of their control.

Mr Tuidrola said they were facing these problems because unloading was done at anchorage and not at Suva Port.

In reality he said while they wanted the unloading to be quick, it would all depend on the barge and its crew and the truck drivers. Unloading he said could not be done when there is rain and also at low tide.

The barge he said could only work on fine weather and whenever the sea is rough it would also stop as it could be damaged during the unloading at the anchorage.

When contacted the agents Carpenters Shipping supervisor Kali Kotobalavu said the Maipo River had been in the country for over a month.
