Representatives of the Fulton Hogan Hiways board of directors officially opened the newly constructed four-classroom block at Lavena Primary School on the island of Taveuni on May 22, 2017.

The board of directors included chairperson Bob Fulton, and directors Graeme Tapp, John Boocock and Bill Caradus. It was led by FHH general manager Duncan Fraser.

When Tropical Cyclone Winston struck in February last year, the school lost everything.

Desks, chairs, office equipment and stationery were deemed a Category C, or unsafe to use.

Children were left to study in tents.

But teamwork, through the Rotary Clubs of New Zealand and Taveuni, corporate organisations in New Zealand, and supported by FHH, helped rebuild the school.

By October 2016, eight months after Tropical Cyclone Winston, the first two classrooms were completed and students had moved in.

No other school in Category C is said to have made similar progress. This is indicative of the support from donors and volunteers.

A month later, the school returned to full operation.

Kelera Nakadi of Somosomo, who attended the opening, said that one could feel the “joy and happiness” among the members of the Lavena community throughout the opening ceremony.

Lavena Primary School was one of two “Post Winston” projects that were assisted by Fulton Hogan and FHH.

The other, the Vatukalo Community Centre, Ovalau Island, was rebuilt last year.
