Elderly members of the Senior Citizens Ba Community Centre will now be able to do more creative things thanks to the new sewing machines.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa handed over the machines to the centre in Ba, yesterday.

“The secretary was requesting for sewing machines. I particularly like this request. Not so often do I get a request for equipment from senior citizens, but for the purpose of creating things,” Ms Vuniwaqa said.

“The secretary had told me that this centre is very active with active members which made me happy about the request that came. I thought to personally pay a visit to the centre.”

Centre member, 71-year-old Salochna Devi, said: “I have been part of the centre for the last 20 years and I learn new things every week.

“I will now learn how to sew clothes after the sewing machine we have received from the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation,” she said.

The centre hosts elderly members from the Ba community and the programmes were scheduled on Wednesdays and Fridays on a weekly basis.

But with the arrival of the sewing machines, it has now scheduled on Thursdays for sewing lessons.

The daily activities are two hours.
