Judge Tells Lawyer To Be Sure About Drug Case

‘Don’t waste my time with cases full of loopholes because who knows someone might have framed them,’ Justice Temo said.
A Suva judge told a State prosecutor yesterday to be sure that he had a strong case against a couple charged with being in possession of methamphetamine.
Justice Salesi Temo had questioned the prosecutor, Taitusi Tuenuku, about the type of evidence he had to prove his case against the accused couple.
“Don’t waste my time with cases full of loopholes because who knows someone might have framed them,” Justice Temo said.
Mr Tuenuku had told the court that methamphetamine was allegedly found in the ceiling of the washroom at the accused’s residence.
The couple, Rakesh Charan, 48, and Arti Narayan, 32, who are charged with one count of possession of illicit drugs appeared, before Justice Temo at the High Court in Suva.
Mr Tuenuku told the court that the forensic report by the Government analyst would prove that the substance obtained from the two accused were white crystal substance called methamphetamine.
Their bail was extended.
Defence lawyer Aman Ravindra-Singh told the court that it was the fourth occasion for a pre-trial conference.
“The prosecution has no evidence to show and prove possession,” Mr Ravindra-Singh told the court.
It is alleged that on May 9, last year, the couple were found in possession of 57.5 grams of methamphetamine.
The case has been adjourned to July 31, for a pre-trial conference.
