President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote yesterday urged the Fiji Red Cross Society to work closely with Government to strengthen its relief and rehabilitation efforts.

“We cannot operate effectively without some form of national co-ordination and sharing of information,” Mr Konrote said.

He said to operate in isolation would result in the potential duplication of effort.

Mr Konrote was speaking yesterday at the opening of the Fiji Red Cross national council meeting at the Southern Cross Hotel in Suva.

This was attended by representatives of the 16 local branches; the International Federation of Red Cross and International Committee of Red Cross Society.

He said both the Red Cross and Government had limited resources at their disposal, but the collaboration of both would assure that no one who was in need missed out.

While encouraging the work of the organisation with Government, Mr Konrote also questioned the members to consider the type of support it could provide to help address climate change.

As the Prime Minister made his way to co-host the United Nations Ocean Conference in New York, Mr Konrote reminded the society of the catastrophic effects of climate change on humanity at large.

He emphasised the need to work together to combat climate change.

“Now would be a good time to work with Government as Fiji prepares to chair the United Nations Convention on Climate Change or COP23 from November this year,” Mr Konrote said.
