The growing number of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints congregation in the North has led to the recent formation of the Labasa District.

In an interview yesterday, LDS church Fiji mission president LaMar Layton said they had more than 2000 church members in the North.

“We had one district of the church that covers all of Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Rabi and so this conference started on Friday,” Mr Layton said.

“And we divided the district because the district is growing into two districts, the Taveuni District and the Labasa District. I think we had over 500 in attendance during the conference.”

He said the church branches in the North had been performing really well in recent years.

Mr Layton said they had a total of 11 churches in the North, four of which were on Taveuni, one on Rabi Island and six on Vanua Levu.

“We see that both the Northern churches continue to grow and develop,” he said.

“Next stage would be to turn it into a stake and that’s a geographical term where you have a stake in the ground to support a tent.

“So when it becomes strong enough it becomes a stake that can help the entire church.”

This is Mr Layton’s final year in the country as president before he returns to Salt Lake City, Utah in the United States with his wife Lynette Layton.

“It has been an exciting three years here in Fiji and I could not have asked for a better place on earth to serve as a mission president,” he said.

“The people are the wonder and the beauty of the islands, we could not have asked for a better assignment.”
