More than 100 villagers living in Nasaro Village of the Namataku District, in Navosa Province, now have access to a reliable supply of clean water.

With the completion of the Nasaro Village Water Supply Project earlier this year the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) was happy after contracting the Nasaro Village Water Committee to assist with labour on the project.

Also contracted was the Pacific Architecture Engineering Consultants (PAEC) to undertake the project construction.

The $221,000 project began late last year, and included the construction of a new dam, the laying of three kilometres of five centimetre PVC pipe, the laying of 0.2 kilometres of five centimetre galvanized pipes, the installation of a 10,000 litre Rota tank after the construction of its base, the installation of 18 standpipes and showers, and the installation of a booster pump to allow water to be distributed to the houses on higher levels.

Nasaro Village Project Consultant Isikeli Mawalu said: “We were collecting water direct from the Sigatoka River which is about 20 metres from our village. “But for drinking, we depended upon water tanks or travelling. Otherwise, we boiled water from the Sigatoka River.”

According to Mr Mawalu, he is one of the third generation of villagers to have gone without a reliable supply of clean water, until this project was completed.

“Today, there is totally a big change in our lives after the completion of this water project, no one wants to use the river again,” he said.

“The mothers no longer need to go and wash the clothes in the river like they used to before this project.

“We have been blessed by this project and it has changed our way of life. We are so thankful to the Government as they have helped us to improve our lives.”.
