A seminar is scheduled for tomorrow, organised by the Catholic Archdiocese of Suva Justice and Development Commission.

The seminar titled ‘Reading the Signs of the Times in Fiji – Catholic Social Teaching and Socio-Political Issues’ will be held at the St Joseph’s Secondary School Hall in Suva at 9am.

In a press conference yesterday, Archbishop Peter Loy Chong said the seminar would have four different sessions on various themes.

Archbishop Loy Chong said the seminar is focused on creating discussions and awareness on various issues.

The seminar’s participants will consist of Catholic politicians, chiefs, clergies, members of the Fiji Council of Churches, lay church leaders and representatives of the non-government organisations.

“The conference is not about telling people what party to vote for or to support a particular party. We are inviting all politicians regardless what party they belong to,” he said.

Sessions will be on the historical analysis of power in Fiji, environment-the care of the vanua, proposed village by-laws, and a brief explanation on key principles of the Catholic social teachings.

He hopes after the seminar, participants will be better informed on the church’s teaching in regard to the political, social, economic and the environment issues which affect them.

Confirmed speakers for the seminar include Na Marama Bale Na Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa, the Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalalabalavu, Alisi Daurewa, and Archbishop Loy Chong.

The church is expected to conduct similar seminars in the Western and Northern Divisions later in the year.
