Poor oral health at an early age can significantly affect school performance, social skills and self-esteem says divisional dental officer Northern, Nadeem Sattar.

And he encouraged students to take good care of their “Bula Smiles” as poor oral health could have immense negative impacts on their lives.

Mr Sattar made the comment as he addressed more than 300 students gathered at Batinikama Primary School in Labasa of the importance of maintaining their oral health.

This week is National Oral Week.

“Oral health is fundamental to overall health, well being and quality of life. A healthy mouth enables one to eat, speak, socialise without pain, ache, discomfort or embarrassment,” Mr Sattar said.

“We Fijians are known for our Bula Smiles and it is important that we keep taking good care of our teeth.”

Mr Sattar said that the most dental problems faced by children in Fiji were tooth decay, early gum disease and injuries that were caused by sports and accidents.

“The purpose of this weeks’ theme “Your Smile Matters” is to create awareness among school children on improving their oral health status and reducing oral diseases,” he said.

“Untreated tooth decay often cause pain and infection affecting the child’s ability to eat play, and socialise and learn,” Mr Sattar added.
