Fiji’s weightlifting sensation Eileen Cikamatana will be competing at the International Weightlifting Federation’s World Junior Championship in Japan from June 15– 23.

Cikamatana is the current holder of the Commonwealth junior and Commonwealth senior records in the newly established 90kg category.

As part of her preparation, she will compete at tomorrow’s French National Championship, in Mont De Marsan, together with 10 other lifters from the Oceania Weightlifting Institute.

“This trip has been kindly funded by the office of the Embassy of France to New Caledonia.,” stated Weightlifting Fiji in a press release.

“The stay in France has been covered by the French Weightlifting Federation through the sports ministry.

“The squad is very pleased to be given this opportunity to compete as guests in France.

“During their stay, they will visit the excellent sporting facilities that Paris has.

“They will be staying and training at the National Institute of Sport INSEP.”

This is Cikamatana’s first year of competing in the World Junior Championship, having been a youth athlete last year, when she won a gold medal at the World Youth Championship in Malaysia.

She will be joined in Japan by national coach, Joe Vueti and fellow lifter, Taniela Rainibogi at the World Junior Championship. Rainibogi will be competing in the 85kg category. Earlier this year, he had travelled to Mont Dore, New Caledonia to train with Cikamatana at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute for six weeks where he improved his lifts by a total of 20kg.

Cikamatana will be competing on Thursday, June 22, while Rainibogi will be taking part on Tuesday, June 20.
