Ocean

Our ocean is our life

Tomasi Boginiso,

Nasinu

Before the planes landed in Fiji, the means of transport was travelling by sea. To get from one part of the world to another was by sea.

Apart from that, most of the Fijian people rely on the ocean for their daily lives, especially for food.

Despite the overfishing over the years, the ocean has never given up on us.

Everyone must have surely eaten something from the ocean one way or another and we should always remember that when we throw rubbish either on land or into the water, it affects everybody.

All this rubbish ends up in the ocean and we sometimes eat from the ocean. So in simple terms, you are also eating part of the rubbish that you throw away carelessly.

Government is fighting for our oceans in New York and hopefully the whole world co-operates and works together in preserving our oceans. So the only way we could help is by not littering and always keeping our rivers and ocean clean.

World Oceans Day

Neelz Singh,

Lami

This is observed on June 8 every year with a theme on: “Our Oceans, Our Future”, and will focus on the prevention of plastic ocean pollution.

Should we eliminate plastic products and bags to save our planet?

The oceans are a major source of food and medicines and a critical part of the biosphere. We need our ecosystem because it is our source of living to sustain and balance nature.

Around 80 per cent of all litter in our oceans is made of plastic – which has devastating effects on wildlife, fisheries and tourism; costing an estimated billions in damage to marine ecosystems. In the past few decades, the threats from pollution, overfishing and other forms of exploitation to marine habitats have increased dramatically not only in the Pacific, but in our Fiji waters as well.

The world’s oceans play a key role for life on Earth.

Save our ocean and marine life.
