No Money, Coach Filo Quits
Fijian Under -21 netball players celebrate winning the Oceania World Youth Cup qualifying tournament in New Zealand last year.

Filo Korovulavula gave her time and effort all for a good cause but she was disappointed in the end.

The Fijian Under-21 assistant coach was promised in January that she would be part of the Vicki Wilson coaching team to the Netball World Youth Cup in Gaborone, Botswana on July 8-16.

But Korovulavula handed in her resignation on Wednesday night after she was informed by Netball Fiji executives that she cannot travel with the team due to lack of funds.

A disappointed Korovulavula confirmed to SUNsports yesterday that she has stepped down.

“After the U21 Netball Series on January, I attended a meeting with the Fijian National Sports Commission and they had conveyed to us that the funds would cater for only 12 players, coach, manager and a physio,” the former netball goal-shooter said.

“But Netball Fiji was told to look for the money to pay for my airfares and other expenses to Botswana. Our coach Vicki Wilson had told the Netball Fiji executives the importance of having an assistant coach with the team so Vicki had requested the executives to find the money. So from that time they had promised me to get the funds so that I can travel with the team.”

Korovulavula had been monitoring the national U21 players training programmes since Wilson is away overseas for most of the time.

“I was told by the Netball Fiji executives that they cannot take me because they need $11,000 to $12,000 in order to accommodate me in the team. They simply weren’t able to afford it.”

When contacted yesterday, Netball Fiji confirmed funding available for the NYWC 2017 in Botswana, did not cover the assistant coach.

“We have attempted to make allowances from within our own resources to cater for her cost but this has not eventuated given unscheduled expenses related to recent international events held in January and May and payments earmarked for the fee levied by International Netball Federation in regards to hosting the NWYC 2021, which is due soon,” stated NF.

“Our focus at present is the Fijian Pearls and we need to get quality competition for our national team in the next few months given that we haven’t played any international test matches the last two years.

“These competitions are scheduled over the latter part of the year.

“We met with the assistant coach Filo on Wednesday to relay this decision and she has chosen to resign from her position. We have thanked her for her services and offered to remunerate her for her time, in addition to the transport allowance she received on a weekly-basis. We would like to wish Filo well in her future coaching endeavours”
