Volunteer Receives Prestigious Sanatan Award

Volunteer Jay Dayal is the first individual recipient of the Dharma Ratna for his contribution to the Fiji Yuva Institute of Sanatan Gyan.

He was recognised for his voluntary services assisting more than 1000 students since 2013.

Fiji Yuva Institute of Sanatan Gyan is a Hindu religious organisation committed to providing Hindu scriptural knowledge to youths.

“I had not expected anything of this sort and it came as a surprise,” Mr Dayal said.

Dharma Ratna literally means a “Hindu Dharma Gem”.

“A Ratna award is usually given to someone for exemplary service.”

This is the first time for an individual from Fiji to receive such an award.

“Usually some organizations hand it over to their own members but in this case I am not a member of the Institute.”

He also added that through the Hindu Council of Fiji and in his personal capacity he had assisted youth groups for a long time.

“I use my own money and also raise charity fundraising using my contacts with friends in Fiji and abroad to assist the underprivileged. I do it as my religious duty.”

Mr Dayal plans to continue with his contributions towards the organization.

“I am quite touched by the work the institute is doing,” he said.

“It is the best sectarian Hindu youth organization in Fiji that focusses on educating youths and upholds the teachings of Dharma in the right manner.”
