Government Grant To Improve Sigatoka River

The Fijian Government has allocated a grant of $800,000 towards the Sigatoka Riverbank project.
This will include the construction of retaining walls to curb soil erosion.
“Work is expected to start soon, but some clarification with Lands needs to be finalised first before actual work starts,” Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala said.
The Minister added that the Local Government Committee will visit Sigatoka later this month to meet with stakeholders on the boundary extension programme.
On the agenda is the relocation of the market and bus station.
The committee has been in consultation with the landowners and Sigatoka Town Council.
Mr Bala confirmed that similar approach will be also carried out for the Navua and Nadi towns respectively.
Meanwhile the Ministry has undertaken the initiative to review the Local Government Act to make municipal councils carry out their work efficiently.
The committee is expected to submit its report to his office before September.
