Inmates completing the Seed of Success training have been challenged to use their time well once they are discharged.

Assistant Commissioner corrections Jo Kulinidilo told the 38 first time offenders at the Nasinu Corrections Centre that they were wasting time serving in prison.

“Spending five years in prison is a waste of time, majority of you have land, resources yet you are wasting your time here,” he told inmates at the closing of the Ministry of Youth and Sports facilitated workshop.

The weeklong workshop ended on Friday.

“If you had not offended and serving your sentence here now;  in five years you would be making so much money,” he said.

“If you were studying you would have acquired a certificate, diploma and even a degree during that time.

“Majority of you now in prisons around Fiji are iTaukei and aged between 18 to 35 years. You are all able bodies but lack discipline to challenge yourselves to make good decisions.

“There is nothing glamorous about prison, empower yourselves with what you have learnt from this workshop. Turn a new leaf, make a new start.

“Make use of the opportunity given to you now that you have attended this workshop. When you leave here do not come back.

“Go back and upgrade your skills and knowledge and it is never too late to learn.

Mr Kulinidilo said that the Nasinu Corrections Centre will soon be the Learning Centre for similar workshops to upgrade and empower inmates before they are discharged.

This set of inmates is the first of many more in the future to participate in the Seeds of Success workshop.
