Surfing In Tavarua

The Outerknown Fiji Pro has been on over the last two weeks out at Cloudbreak, Tavarua. The women’s pro was won by Courtney Conologue with Tatiana Weston-Webb finished second. The surfing was at the highest level as the women tore up the waves throughout their week-long event. Many heats went down to the last 30 seconds with the lead constantly changing.

Then it was into the men’s world championship tour event.  Local wildcard Tevita Gukilau took on current world number 1 John John Florence. There was a great moment for the Fijian during his heat when Gukilau stroked into a monster size blue wall, thread the needle and emerged down the line to take the highest wave score of his Round 1 heat. Unfortunately Gukilau failed to find a back-up quality wave and went into Round 2, whilst JJF advanced directly into Round 3. In his round 2 heat Gukilau failed to find the allusive waves and the scores required and exited the event.

Top seeds Australian Owen Wright and Brazilian Gabriel Medina were bundled out in their respective round 3 heats leaving the Jeep leaders board open to a host of top surfers still in the event. With a dropping swell the WSL organisers have put the event on hold. When competition resumes out at Cloudbreak they will continue from halfway through round 3

DENMARK NEXT

Locally the FSA and Beachouse have organised a Surfing and SUP event at Beachouse on July 15th and 16th. The event will be part of the selection process for the Fiji team going to the world SUP titles in Denmark in September.

The Stand Up Paddle (SUO) sport is part of the ISA governance and they continue their 20 year involvement to administer this great sport. The ISA long term goals are to eventually have the SUP division at the Olympics. First things first though get your entry into this selection event and be included in the team to Denmark. Entries are available on the FSA Facebook page.
