Eighty-eight women will represent the Northern Division at the National Women’s Expo when it opens on Wednesday.

Lanieta Niumataiwalu of Nasekula Village, a tailor by profession, who has been selected out of the 33 women from the Macuata Province is excited about the event because it will be her first.

“An expo as such helps us to market our products so that people can see, appreciate and hopefully buy them,” she said.

The president of the Bua Soqosoqo Vakamarama, Ana Lalanabaravi, said preparation by the 27 women selected from the province were well underway.

“Everything will be provided for the women but if anybody else wanted to go they were welcome to do so but at their own cost,” she said.

The first National Women’s Expo was held for three days at the Vodafone Arena in Suva from August 6 to August 8, 2014. The Speaker to Parliament, Dr Jiko Luveni, was the Minister for Women then.

The current Minister for Women, Mereseini Vuniwaqa, in an earlier interview reiterated the need to recognise and appreciate the economic contribution that women in rural areas provided.

“They are often constrained by unequal access to productive resources and services and inadequate or inaccessible infrastructure,” the minister said.

“I wish to state here that it is time to walk away from such practices and realise the potential of women as breadwinners and income earners as well.”

The annual women’s expo will be held at the Vodafone Arena in Laucala Bay, Suva. It ends on Friday.
