Wife Wants Closure On Salesh Chand’s Demise
The 37-year-old wife of a murder victim in Lautoka has made fresh demands for bringing to closure the investigations of his death.
Ranjini Devi said she and her two sons, 19-year-old Shivneel Chand and Ravneel Chand, 17, were at a loss with the progress of the investigations by the Fiji Police over the death of 42-year-old Salesh Chand last year.

“It has been one year already and I have not received a single phone call from the Police advising me on the progress of the investigation,” Ms Devi said yesterday.
Mr Chand’s charred remains trapped in a burnt car were found near the Fiji Sugar Corporation grounds in Lautoka on the early morning of June 8.
“It’s me who has been calling them for over a year now and still there has been no progress,” Ms Devi said.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro yesterday said the file for the case was still open.
“The file is still open and the Police department is working on this case.”
Ms Devi said the answers she was receiving from the Police were becoming repetitive and she was concerned with the way the investigations were being handled.
“Every time we give a call to the Police officers, they tell us that the file is open and they are investigating,” Ms Devi said.
Ms Devi is the only one earning in her family to make ends meet.
“I have two sons who attend school. I now work at a second hand shop, six days a week to support my family,” she said.
“The past one year has been very challenging. My two sons are also getting affected in school as well after their father passed away last year.”
Mr Chand had been in Rakiraki for one week working at the Vinod Patel office there before he returned home when the murder took place.
Mr Chand told his wife he was going out not long after he arrived at their Lautoka home. He did not tell her where he was headed.
He failed to return home. The company car he drove away in was found on Wednesday morning (June 8) burnt out at the Fiji Sugar Corporation grounds in Lautoka. Police confirmed the charred remains of Mr Chand were in the car.
After initial investigations and identification by close relatives the Police classified it as a murder case.
