And Netball Fiji wants to close case as Fijian U21 trainer tells why he stepped down too

Former Fijian Under-21 netball coach Filo Korovulavula has refused to accept the $5000 offered to her by Netball Fiji to compensate for her services in looking after the squad for the past year.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Korovulavula alleged that Netball Fiji had not lived up to their promise, which prompted her to quit.

“I had a meeting with Netball Fiji in January and they gave me a letter from the Fiji Sports Commission that they can pay for 12 players and three officials which is the coach, physio and manager,” she said.

“I knew all along from there that they can’t take me so after that Vicki Wilson told Wainikiti (Bogidrau) the importance of taking an assistant coach to Botswana. So she told me to write again to the sports commission that I should be going with the team. Wainikiti had promised me that they will look for the funds to cater for my expenses in order to take me to Botswana. With two weeks to go they relayed the message that they couldn’t take me due to lack of funds.”

When approached yesterday Netball Fiji president Wainikiti Bogidrau did not wish to comment indicating that they are putting a close to the case.

Korovulavula said she was unfairly treated after being with the team for one year.

“It’s not about going to Botswana but it’s about doing the right thing. About six girls in the team travel from the West and they are having difficulties with transportation and accommodation which the association is turning a blind eye on,” she alleged.

Also Fijian U21 trainer Henry Elder has stepped down after differences with head coach Vicki Wilson.

“I feel what has happened with Filo is very unfortunate given the amount of time she spends with the team. She has sacrificed a lot of her time for the team.”

Elder said Korovulavula had a special bond with the players since she spends a lot of time with them while Wilson is away overseas.

“I stepped down from my position because I had differences with Vicki Wilson and as a fitness trainer I’m well-experienced in my field of work. But I strongly feel that Filo should have been given the opportunity to travel with the team since she is aware of the player’s capabilities.”

Wilson was with the Fijian U21 players during their training session last night and did not wish to make a comment.
