Ruling For Stepfather In Rape Case Today

The 15-year-old girl who allegedly became a rape victim at the hands of her step father is now terrified of men.

No one in fact knows how long the victim would be traumatised by the actions of someone she had regarded as her father.

Prosecution lawyer, Kimberly Simisi made this submission while asking for the maximum jail term for the 59-year-old man who had breached the trust of the victim.

The accused was charged for one count of rape and four counts of sexual assault by the High Court in Suva by Judge Justice Riyaz Hamza.

Ms Simisi told the court that the accused also had two previous convictions over the past 10 years one of which could be related to the current charge.

The accused in 2013 was convicted of an indecent act which the prosecution however did not have further details on.

She said looking at his past convictions, the accused had time to change, but had not.

Noting the nature and gravity of the incident, Ms Simisi asked the court to hand down a maximum sentence to the accused.

This she said would be a deterrent to such offenders.

Between March 19, 2016 and March 26, 2016 in Suva the accused had allegedly raped and sexually assaulted his 15-year-old stepdaughter.

Defence lawyer, Sofaia Ratu submitted to the court to consider that the accused had three children who were dependent on him for support.

The judge will deliver his ruling today.
