Government’s allocating a budget for the annual National Women’s Expo is an indication of its recognition of the invaluable contribution of women to nation building.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa made the comment while opening the three-day expo at the Vodafone Arena in Suva yesterday.

A record of women from the 14 provinces and Rotuma will continue to showcase their traditional artistic skills, authentic and contemporary products and share their knowledge over the next two days before closing tomorrow.

“Government’s recognition of the invaluable contribution of women to nation building and the need to economically empower women for more defined and equal roles in the changing world of work is evident in the continuous budgetary allocation for this annual event,” Mrs Vuniwaqa said.

“It is an exciting time for the ministry to return with this much anticipated event of the Fijian Government through the coordination of the Department of Women after a lapse of one year.”

Also at the opening was the Kiribati Vice President Kaurabi Nenem whom Mrs Vuniwaqa hopes would enhance the same initiative for the economic empowerment of Kiribati women.

“The National Women’s Expo is the brainchild of the former Minister for Women who is now the Speaker of Parliament.  Dr Jiko Luveni had a vision to provide a platform for Fiji to recognise and celebrate the talents of Fijian women, while connecting them to markets.

“The partnership and sponsorships from like-minded United Nation agencies, corporate bodies, foreign Governments and business houses also go a long way in strengthening this much-needed platform for our rural women.

“And the women of Fiji salute Dr Luveni for her visionary leadership towards women,” Ms Vuniwaqa said.
