Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho joined the hundreds that gathered at the Nasinu nine miles cemetery to farewell Police Constable Eroni Daugunu yesterday.

PC Daugunu, 22, was a hit and run victim in an accident at Walu Bay at the beginning of this month.

In an emotional send-off Semi Daugunu, who travelled from Vanua Levu for his son’s funeral could not contain his tears, as he bid him his last farewell.

“Goodbye son Roni, my child, everyone is here for you, but we are all very late,” Mr Daugunu said.

“Your only sister, your brothers, uncles, aunts, your team, workmates and your friends are here, but why so soon son?”

Family members, colleagues, teammates and loved ones quietly shed tears to the solemn singing of the choir consisting of the Police band members during the funeral service at the Caubati Methodist Church.

The late PC Daugunu was well known for his kind heart and friendliness.

His mother Vilimaina Sakulavou and only sister Sereana Daugunu grieved openly near the graveyard.

“Oilei na luvequ si’a!” (Oh my good child) cried his mom in her Vanua Levu dialect.

One of his rugby teammates said in the field, the late PC Daugunu wore the number 9 jersey.

“No one could beat him in the field, he is a very talented player and he will be sadly missed.

“I don’t know who would replace him now?

“His dream to wear the Fiji team jersey one day is shattered,” said the young man.

He played for the Waluwalu Blues Police team.

The late PC Daugunu was described as a talented and quiet constable by the Police force.

He always got work assigned to him done on time.

Meanwhile, a Police report released yesterday stated that a man in his 50s is now being questioned over the death of the late PC Daugunu.

The suspect was arrested and his vehicle seized on Tuesday after Police received information about his alleged involvement in the hit and run accident.

Investigations continue.
