From winning medals in Shot put and discus in the 2017 Coca-Cola Games for Suva Grammar School, Lydia Panapasa has achieved another feat.

On Tuesday she was among the 12 players named in the Fijian U21 netball squad to prepare for the Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana next month.

The 17-year-old from Juju, Rotuma said it has been one of her dreams to represent Fiji.

“It feels really good to be part of the team, I still have a lot to learn but I am proud to be here now,” Panapasa said.

“It has been a dream to represent Fiji because I was always told that with my height I could reach this level, maybe further.

“I am quite tall and that is an advantage in a sport like netball, so I have reached this level for now so I will see what happens and hopefully one day I’ll go further.

“Netball is really something I love doing apart from athletics, it is my favourite hobby so it was really great.

“I’ve been fitting in really well with girls from different schools, socialising with them has been good and I am making new friends in the process.

“I am still young and have a lot to learn, so that is what this trip will be about for me, I want to learn as much as I can of other countries so I can improve as an athlete.”

Panapasa is currently recovering from ankle injury.

“I had a basketball game last week, I sprained my ankle but I am recovering slowly,” she said.

“I need to see the physio to tell me what to do and what not to do, so I am taking it slow.”
