Sovi Bay murder case bail ruling today

The Investigating Officer in the Sovi Bay murder case said the accused person, Rizwan Chand, was safer in custody than to be out on bail.

Detective Corporal Sunil Chand was being questioned by defence lawyer, Iqbal Khan, during the bail application hearing at the Sigatoka Magistrates Court yesterday.

Corporal Chand said tension was still high in the vicinity where the alleged murder took place and Ali should be remanded for his own safety.

He told the court the victim’s mother is from Vatukarasa Village near Sovi Bay where the alleged murder took place.

Ali, 32, of Sigatoka Valley Road is alleged to have murdered Sela Macanawai Degei of Bemana Village, also from the Sigatoka Valley, on June 12 and was appearing before Magistrate Timoci Bainivalu.

Magistrate Bainivalu will deliver his ruling on the bail application today.
