Netball Fiji received $324,480 from the Fijian National Sports Commission (FNSC) to fund the national Under-21 team to the Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana next month.

FNSC executive chairman Peter Mazey said the Commission was pleased that it could extend the overseas tour grant to netball as the major female sport in the country.

“Netball had clearly articulated and justified the need for this grant in their submission to the committee last year,” Mazey said.

“Unfortunately, despite repeated requests, the funds provided are restricted to 12 players and three officials. We did not allow netball to use the funds for any additional official.

“The Commission has a standard policy on the number of officials covered under the grant and this applies to all sporting teams.  Funding provisions are allocated only for a coach, manager and a primary care personnel.”

Mazey said the grant also covered capacity building programmes related to Fiji hosting the Netball World Youth Cup 2021 as part of the hosting agreement with the International Netball Federation.

“The INF requires at least three individuals to attend the NWYC to participate in the observe programme in conjunction with the organizing committee of NWYC 2017.

“Apart from capacity building, the Commission is mindful also of the contribution sports has in attracting sports tourism into Fiji and the NWYC 2021 will be a major international event and we need to ensure that our people are ready to manage this event.”

Netball Fiji president Wainikiti Bogidrau said: “We are very grateful to the Government and to the FNSC for providing us with this funding to enable the team to travel to Botswana. This would be one of our most expensive tours ever.”

Bogidrau confirmed that bulk of the grant was for airfares and accommodation.

“We have had to take into account additional expenses inclusive of vaccinations for all athletes and officials

“As with all grants, we are required to provide acquittals with all the necessary payment vouchers and receipts to the Commission.

“We also would like to acknowledge our major sponsors Digicel, Punjas and Coca-Cola Amatil for their continued support for our national teams.”

The Fiji U21 Team leave for Botswana on July 3  and the competition proper will be from July 8-16.
