Lautoka businessman Aiyaz Mohammed Mussa Umarji, who was the main suspect in the ammunition discovery case in early January was discharged by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

This was after the Director of Public Prosecutions Office filed a nolle prosequi against him. Defence lawyer Iqbal Khan had filed submissions earlier saying that Umarji did not know there were ammunitions on his boat. Mr Khan had stated that since Umarji did not know that the ammunition was there he could not be charged for being in possession. Based on those submissions and the nolle prosequi filed by the DPP’s Office, Magistrate Mosese Naivalu discharged Umarji.

Meanwhile, Naushad Ali, butchery manager, 30, of Kashmir, Lautoka and Vijay Singh, 47, mechanic were both granted extended bail by Mr Naivalu. Both accused wanted a bail variation to their bail conditions and the prosecution did not object to their request. The duo are to report the Police Station once a month.

Both Ali and Singh have denied the charges of being in possession of firearms. Mr Naivalu extended bail for the pair and adjourned the case to July 27. They were charged over the discovery of ammunition on January 1.
