Fiji Sun’s shopper of the week is 47-year-old Vilimaina Takayawa.

She lives in Suva but hails from Nukubalavu, Savusavu.

Ms Takayawa was at Nukubalavu for a wedding and Fiji Sun caught up with her at Morris Hedstrom supermarket at Savusavu doing her shopping for the wedding.

She said the shopping was very similar to her family shopping in Suva.

The 47-year-old mother said the difference was the amount of shopping she did.

She said they had talked about the wedding shopping while in Suva and had reminded them to have a shopping plan.

“We had a shopping plan and this made the preparation of the list easier,” she said.

Some of the shopping she made in Suva at MHCC.

The family she said was involved in the planning as this made things easier for her.

The family had already planned for the wedding meal and the list had what was missing from what they had.

A total of $300 was allocated for the shopping.

She said shopping at Morris Hedstrom in Savusavu was similar to the MHCC in Suva.

The supermarket is clean and products are arranged in a manner to make shopping for customers easier.

Members of the staff were friendly and very helpful.

This is the advice a shopkeeper gave her in regards to shopping –

  • Plan to prepare and eat foods you already have at home first.
  • Know how much money you have to spend on food.
  • Make a shopping list based on the money you have to spend and what foods you will need.
  • Buy only the amount of food you can use before it spoils.

Remember: frozen, canned, or shelf-stable foods last longer.

She said she wanted other shopper to make use of this advice.

They prepared a healthy meal for the wedding and for her she just loved coconut curry fish.
