Twenty-two-year-old Waisea Buludrau of Labasa, yesterday fisted the air after receiving his diploma in commercial agriculture.

This was topped up with the acquisition of more than 26 acres of land and money  to start-up his farming venture.

Mr Buludrau was one of the 11 graduate farmers who were yesterday given a major boost to start their farming career in a big way.

The eldest of six siblings was yesterday overwhelmed. Since his parents are no longer earning he is ready to take up the responsibility.

He is a graduate in commercial farming from the Fiji National University, specialising in beef products.

“I commend Government for this initiative and opportunity. I was one of the first lot in 2013 and Government did not forget us – they have assisted us to start off and I am so grateful,” the young farmer said.

His focus now is to make the most of the land given to him.

“As the eldest in the family, a lot of is expected of me. I will go, farm and take care of the younger ones in the family.”

He is dedicated to changing the face of farming in Labasa.

“We’ve learnt a lot. This has been a big opportunity and it is up to us now to contribute to the economy,” he said.

The jubilant new farmer wants to introduce new and efficient farming techniques in Labasa.
