The Suva football team are heading to the top of the points table after they beat Labasa 1-0 in the Vodafone Premier League clash at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori last night. The star of Suva’s win was midfielder Kaliova Tivuli who scored their lone goal.

What happened: In the first 30 minutes of play Labasa dominated play and pressured the Suva defence. Poor finishing let the Babasiga Lions down as the Suva defence stood tall.

Against the run of play, Suva caught the Labasa defenders napping in the 37th minute and Tivuli slammed in the winner.

Half time: Suva 1 – 0 Labasa

In the 60th minute Labasa midfielder Edwin Sahayam missed a golden sitter as the Suva defence was beaten.

Star play: Suva’s left midfielder Ivan Kumar and central midfielder Sahil Dave put on a sterling performance. They were aggressive up front and won Suva many possessions.

Suva coach Nathan Shivam said: “We’re hungary for a win and I think the boys played really well and I’m happy with the player’s performance although we’re not able to play a constructive game.

“We would say Labasa was the toughest opponent so far in the competition since they’re very fast and played constructive football.

“The boys created their chances and we’re happy to score a goal.”

Labasa coach Ronil Lal said: “I’m really disappointed with the boys’ performance as I was expecting the team to score more goals since they missed a lot of chances in the first half.

“But we’ll go back and sort the team out and try to bring about some new strategies in the side to better our performance in the next game.”
