Moses Sandeep Reuben, 23, will soon farm sheep and vegetables on his 7.5 acre land in Olo, which is part of Momi in Nadroga.

As a recipient of the commercial agriculture scholarship launched in 2013, he is keen to bring new farming techniques. Mr Reuben is among 11 recipients who, after completing a 12-month certificate course, now has the chance to make it big with a 99-year lease farm land and financial assistance to venture into commercial farming.

The scholarship was launched by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama during his 2013 National Budget address, with the aim of modernising the agriculture sector and making it more productive for the nation’s needs.

At first there were 47 students who were awarded the scholarships but many decided to choose other fields.

Mr Rueben was raised by his mother, who is the first Indo-Fijian Methodist Church Minister, Reverend Grace Reuben.

“All my life has been spent living in Church quarters. Now, I have got a place to call my own,” Mr Reuben said.

His focus is to target the tourism industry and to use his newfound knowledge in farming to give it his best shot.

“Looking back 10 years ago, a lot of younger people are moving away from farming and do not see farming as a profession. Such an opportunity is set to change that. I intend to establish my farm well and to reach out to the hotel industry,” he said.

He specialises in sheep farming.
