More than 3000 people have applied for solar energy supply in the North and the Department of Energy is hopeful that they will complete the Cakaudrove requests soon.

Director of Energy Paula Katirewa said this was part of Government’s vision to ensure that all Fijians have access to electricity by 2020.

Mr Katirewa said they were currently attending to 3200 solar requests in Cakaudrove which would conclude in November.

“As of now we are currently attending to two battles, one is a total of 3200 applicants while right now we’re  in Cakaudrove aiming to finish in November,” Mr Katirewa said.

“There is another batch which covers 500 households from the North. As far as our numbers are concerned there are still a large number of applications that need to be covered.

“This is an ongoing thing and we will make sure that anyone who has applied has a solar system because it is relevant to their needs.”

He added that they have progressed well ever since the program started in 2002.

“It was a demand driven project before, but now that the communities are not paying anything there is an influx,” Mr Katirewa said.

“We have attended to more than 7000 homes in the North ever since the inception of this program.”

Mr Katirewa said this first started from small grants that DoE receives.
