Vodafone Flying Fijians captain Akapusi Qera knows the uphill battle is not over for them after their 27-22 win over Scotland at the ANZ Stadium, Suva yesterday. Celebrating two Test victories on home soil, the bigger challenge will be in two weeks time when they face Tonga and Samoa in the 2019 Rugby World Cup qualifiers.

The Flying Fijians face Tonga on July 8 in Nukualofa and Samoa on July 15 at Apia Stadium, Samoa

Qera said the players enjoyed their win against the Scots but it will be short-lived as they start gearing up for the qualifiers tomorrow.

“We know playing against Samoa and Tonga will be a physical match upfront and we’re expecting that and we’re used to that,” Qera said.

“We’ll go back and enjoy the moment with our families and enjoy the win but bearing in mind that Tonga and Samoa are two very important games. We know what is at stake and what’s needed by the players so at the moment we’re trying to build a winning environment and a winning culture for the players and management. We know the challenge that is ahead of us and we look forward to playing against Tonga and Samoa.”

BARCLAY: WE LOST CONTROL

Scotland captain John Barclay said Fiji was better than them in some areas and had more control on the field.

“We played a tough game, we came off from a high after our last game against the Aussies but we were outplayed by the Fijians in certain areas.

“It was physical and we couldn’t take control of the game, compared to our last game we had control but this time around that wasn’t the case.

“There were some areas we could have capitalised on but that’s the game of rugby for you, we need to learn from this game and keep improving.”
