Twelve seed Ryan Seggerman and Violet Apisah took out the boys and girls titles respectively at the South Pacific Open Junior Championships at the ITF court in Lautoka yesterday.

Seggerman from United States of America beat number three seed Hiroki Sakagawa of Japan (6-1, 6-3) in the final of the of the Under-18 category. Girl’s number one seed Violet Apisah of Papua New Guinea defeated number two seed Carol Youngsuh Lee of Northern Marianas (6-0, 6-4).

In the C-category Manami Ukita of Japan defeated number one seed Helena Spiridis of Australia (1-6, 6- 3, 10-7) in the girl’s division while in the boys Ryota Ishii of Japan proved too strong for Nowa Matsubayashi (7-5, 6-1).

Tennis development officer Aaron Bosse said the finals were great and the turnout was also good.

He said the finals were played in good spirits and players put up a really good fight. “It was really good as we had players coming from 19 different countries around the world,” Bosse said.

He said they were here chasing ranking points to build their junior world rankings as part of International Tennis Federation (ITF) tour.

“We are looking forward to our next tournament which is next week which is a follow up up from this tournament.

“A lot of these players will be back again and also we’ll have new players arriving from other countries as well.”

Top local players were also taking part in the event but failed to reach the playoffs.
