Yalava and Dagau Settlements in Macuata have received free water tanks  through the Rainwater Harvesting assistance under the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF).

Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Vijay Nath handed over six to Yalava Settlement and 11 to Dagau Settlement. Each tank can take in 5200 litres.

Mr Nath said the assistance would not only enhance accessibility to clean and safe drinking water, but it will also improve the livelihood of the people.

“These water tanks will enable you to conduct your daily activities with ease, without fetching water from far away,” he said.

“You are now able to do your chores, your washing, bathing and even cooking by just harvesting rain water from the heavens.”

Mr Nath added that Government is working on plans to ensure that all Fijians have access to adequate water supply.

“The Fijian Government, through the Water Authority of Fiji is working on a long-term plan to ensure all Fijians are able to receive continuous and consistent water supply,” he said.

Mr Nath said that while Government was providing such assistance, people also had a part to play.

“Make sure you take good care of your tanks, keep them clean and please, take notice of the stickers that are pasted on these tanks. It clearly states that – Every Drop Counts.

“These stickers are not for decoration, it is a very important message which calls for our responsibility as individuals.

“We as project recipients have a part to play and I would like to take this time to encourage you all to work with your water committee in looking after the tanks.”

Mr Nath also encouraged individuals to take advantage of such assistance as it would not only provide safe drinking water, but also avoid the contraction of water-borne diseases.
