Living Life After Rugby

Rugby players are usually praised for their efforts on the field but little is known of what they face off the field.

The Pacific Rugby Players Association (PRPA) gathered former Fijian rugby players at Albert Park on Friday to talk on the issues facing current players and the part they can play in ensuring a safe transition from life after rugby.

PRPA personal development manager Aayden Clarke said it was important issues like depression, suicide and life after rugby that was addressed.

“This is an opportunity to get all former players of Fiji together to rekindle friendship and memories,” Clarke said.

“Our whole programme involves us working with the current and young players on personal development.

“We want to make them better rugby players. Some of these men have been through some interesting challenges in their life after rugby.

“There is no official mentoring and there is a huge problem with what players go through, not only on the field but off the field as well.

“We are focusing on players transitioning out of the game and we have lots of stories in the rugby industry at the moment around depression and cases of suicide.”

Former national coach/player Samuela Domoni who also played for the NSW Waratahs, London Irish and Saracens knows how hard it is for rugby players to settle down into a normal life after rugby.

”It is very important because there is a huge transition from being a professional rugby player and going back to being an ordinary citizen,” Domoni said.

“People are not aware that it actually carries a lot of weight and if you are not taught how to handle the adversity of the transition, then it is not good and life will be tough.”
