Pacific sprint queen Toea Wisil leads a strong 37-member Papua New Guinea contingent for the Oceania Athletics Area Championships which starts tomorrow at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.

Coach Wilson Malana said his contingent comprised young athletes who are taking part in an international competition for the first time.

Having the most influential female athlete on the team, Malana said Wisil is an inspiration for the other athletes.

“A few of the athletes are very young and some are competing in an international competition for the first time which is something huge for them,” Malana said.

“They want to do the best they can and achieve their personal best. We don’t expect anything other than them doing their best.

“It is great having Toea here with us, she is an amazing athlete and her presence is a bonus to our athletes.

“Wisil has been a huge motivating factor for the young ones and they look up to her.

“Knowing they are going up against countries like Fiji, Australia and New Zealand, they want to do their best.

“We are excited to see what the other island nations have to offer.

“This is a good opportunity for us to see where our athletes stand against the rest.”
