Inconsiderate drivers

Spencer Robinson, Suva

While taking an early morning walk along Grantham Road in Raiwaqa, it was appalling to note that some motorists were travelling at a considerably high and dangerous speed.

Some drivers are just too inconsiderate and have disregard for others including pedestrians of which the majority are school children.

Regardless of the absence of road humps along Grantham Road with the exception of pedestrian crossings, it is imperative that motorists drive within the safe speed level taking into consideration other road users, and most importantly considering the densely-populated area of Raiwaqa.

Continuous efforts and awareness by the Land Transport Authority, Fiji Police Force and other relevant authorities to combat accidents and casualties on our roads have fallen on the deaf ears of these types of inconsiderate motorists.

All road users, especially motorists need to be prudent and work towards fully complying with our road safety rules. They were, after all, designed for our own safety and protection.

National Sports, Wellness Day

Neelz Singh,  Lami

Established in 2014, National Sports and Wellness Day has been celebrated from 2015. National Sports Day in Fiji was created to encourage national participation and celebrate sports as a means of acquiring physical fitness for a healthy lifestyle.

It augurs well in our fight against non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and offers exciting opportunities for communities to come together to get active and have fun.

This holiday, while encouraging sports and physical activity, also sets a platform to use sport as a tool to increase the level of physical activity across all segments of Fiji’s population and promote health and wellness through the partnership- based programmes of all the national sports organisations.

It focuses on raising public awareness of the value of sports and recognizing the immense contribution made by Fijian athletes over the past many years.

Thank you teachers

Manoah Kaleca,  Suva

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the hardworking teachers of Gospel Primary School and its management.

I attended a couple of my children’s Community Awareness Programmes or CAPS meeting a week ago and I truly appreciate the effort and sacrifice the teachers were making for the benefit of the students.

Our children spend quiet a large portion of their day in school.  The teacher to student ratio is disproportionate and a few of the ones I spoke to had over 50 students to teach on a normal school day.

I am in awe that these teachers still manage to carry on their work and do the best they can to give these students a good education.

This sometimes takes its toll on their health, finance and other aspects of life but they still manage to put on a smile whenever they can.

Some parents are quick to point fingers at the teachers when their children complain at home and some have even gone to the extent of writing to the Minister of Education.  Come on folks, teachers deserve better than that and they should be treated with respect.

They are doing an excellent job and they should be commended for it.  Instead of criticising, we should be assisting and encouraging our children and our teachers whenever we can.

Certificate costs

Sukha Singh,  Labasa

Why do Birth, Marriage and Business registration certificates have different costs?

I asked one of the officers serving us why a Marriage certificate costs more than a Birth certificate.

She said a Marriage certificate had more information.

But to me the size of the paper and the color is the same so the price should remain at $2.20 for all certificates.
