More Emphasis On PE Needed In Schools: Reddy

Quality physical education (PE) programmes in school will ensure students are healthy and will lead healthier lifestyles.

Yesterday a technical working group met to discuss ways in which PE could become a stronger part of the education system.

While addressing the team, the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Mahendra Reddy said the other important factor to consider was that PE should be made accessible for all boys, girls and persons with disabilities, equally.

The group of sporting professionals, primary school and high school teachers met to discuss quality PE policy, structure and key actions at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay conference room.

“The holistic approach to education does not allot academia an isolated or elevated importance, but it is strongly and appropriately paralleled with curriculum perspectives and a range of extra-curricular activities,” Mr Reddy said.

And this is well aligned to the philosophy of education in Fiji which places the child at the centre of learning and contributes to the development of the child spiritually, intellectually, culturally, socially, emotionally, aesthetically and physically, he added.

He added that educational drive as such also put great importance and prominence to the delivery of PE to the children.

“Foremost it supports the healthy living of children,” he said.

“Our children all over the world are falling prey to junk food or poor eating lifestyle habits which are affecting their growth and development.

“The high number of (non-communicable diseases) NCDs affecting children nowadays is a testimony of this growing worry.”

And exercise and physical training has been always promoted as a solution to fight these NCDs.

Dr Reddy added that PE in schools was the stepping stone for many sports people who are gracing world fame and glory.
