The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) has donated 296 more wheelchairs to the Spinal Injury Association of Fiji.

Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Veena Bhatnagar said: “On behalf of the Fijian Government, let me thank you most sincerely for meeting a great need for persons with disabilities.

“It is because of services like this that persons with disabilities in our beloved Fiji can now get the much needed assistive devices, especially wheelchairs.”

She also said that the initiative showed the church’s commitment towards assisting the Spinal Injury Association of Fiji.

“The wheelchairs donated in the past and today, meet World Health Organisation standards.”

Welfare manager for the LDS Church in Fiji and Tuvalu Brother Frank Stanford said that the commitment began in 2013 and has grown over the years.

“Today we witnessed the fourth consignment of Latter Day Saints Church charity to Fiji,” Mr Stanford said.

“The wheelchairs are designed in the United States and assembled in China.

“The shipment comes out of China. This shipment brings it to 1000 brought in the last four years.”

He said the church would work closely with the association of Fiji on future projects.
