Eighteen-year-old Katarina Lilicama was content after she took silver in the women’s Under-20 javelin event during the Oceania Athletics Championship at the ANZ Stadium, Suva, yesterday.

Jessica Abridge of Australia won gold after she threw 44.96 metres followed by Lilicama with a throw of 43.03m while Vaimiti Marii of French Polynesia settled for bronze with 40.26m.

The Year 12 student of Napuka Secondary School in Vanua Levu said despite not competing in the U18 category she was happy with her achievement.

“It’s exciting to win silver in this event but I felt I could have won gold if I had participated in the under-18 grade,” Lilicama said.

“But I feel whatever the result was I still managed to give my personal best.

“Personally, I faced some financial difficulties especially on travelling but the school management had to cater for that after Athletics Fiji promised to reimburse the funds”

Lilicama dedicated her achievement to her mum and coach for their endless support.
