Veitaqomaki sets new record

It was an overwhelming moment for Fiji’s Petero Veitaqomaki after he set a new record in the Under-18 men’s 800 metres event at the Oceania Athletics Championship yesterday.
Veitaqomaki clocked 1minute 57:65seconds to win gold followed by Patrick Leahy of Australia (1:57:91) and New Zealand’s Samuel Gouverreur (1:58:13).
The Year 11 student of Sigatoka Methodist High School said the secret behind the win was regular training at the sand dunes.
“This is my first time to compete in a regional competition and I am very grateful for the opportunity,” Veitaqomaki said
“I was able to keep trying my best in the last lap because I knew before the race that I will win gold.
“I feel my continuous training at the sand dunes helped me a lot.
“I would like to thank my parents for their endless support.”
