Vitinia Toma relies on the sale of her reusable plastic-made bags to make ends meet.

Yet the mother of nine has welcomed the 10 cents tax imposed on every plastic bags because she believes it will grow her business.

Though she relies on plastics for her business, she sees it as an opportunity because people would turn to her instead to buy her reusable and smartly-crafted plastics.

“They are discarded in school, town and cities, parks and on highways,” she said.

The 39-year-old keeps her business alive by rushing to Nausori Town every Sunday morning with her husband to pick discarded plastic bags before the garbage truck arrives.

Then carefully, she’d wash all the plastic bags nicely, dry it, cut it up and start designing it.

She said from plastic bags, she makes handbags, laptop bags, purses, mobile cases, even shopping bags and more.

“There will always be plastic everywhere and this where I am taking the initiative to recycle these bags and make something beautiful and reusable.”

As a housewife she said that this had been her main source of income assisting her in supporting her nine children in their education.

She earns between $2000 to $3000 annually from the sale.

She sells her products to Likuliku Resort, Toberua Resort, and Musket Island Resort for their guests.

She said even those living in Nausori buy from her.

She also thanked Flour Mills of Fiji (FMF) for allowing her use reject plastic bags from the factory to do her handicraft.
