The Vodafone Flying Fijians coaching crew are working hard on various tactics that could disrupt the Tongan mauls.

This was confirmed by Flying Fijians head coach John McKee yesterday indicating that they are wary of the big Tongan forwards.

“We’ve been working this week on getting in very early to stop their maul,” McKee said from Nuku’alofa in Tonga.

“We know even with their maul set-up we can stop their momentum and on two occasions the referee will ask the opposition to play the ball so we will be looking to be very strong there.

“To initially stop their maul and try to get our hands on the ball so they can’t turn the ball when there are turnovers.”

McKee said playing in front of 10,000 fans at the Teufaiva Stadium on Saturday, they’re expecting the hosts to play a very physical game.

“We need to be very strong in defence to withstand their attacks as they will be using their pick and go and their mauls and we should withstand the pressure.”

The no-nonsense coach said the players need to keep their heads clear about the way they want to play the game.

The Flying Fijians went straight into business as soon as they checked into their hotel by going to the pool for their recovery session.

The side yesterday morning had a light training session at the Latter Day Saints (LDS) Liahona High School ground and had the afternoon off for team review.

The Flying Fijians continue with their training run today before their Captain’s run on Friday.
