Man Accused Of Raping Girl, 17, Denied Bail

A 52-year-old driver appeared in court yesterday charged with one count each of rape and wrongful confinement.

Nacanieli Natadra, of Lautoka, appeared before Magistrate Rangajeeva Wimalasena at the Lautoka Magistrates Court.

It is alleged that on July 3, the victim, a 17-year-old student, was on her way to the shop in Rifle Range, Lautoka, when Natadra approached her in his vehicle.

It is alleged that he grabbed the girl and forced her into his vehicle, after which he tied her hands and legs.

Natadra then allegedly drove to a secluded spot near a service station in Field 40 and raped her.

Bail was objected by Police prosecutor Sergeant Mun Sami Chetty.

Sergeant Chetty told the court that the accused had committed a very serious offence.

“The manner in which the crime was committed as the victim was heading to a shop when accused grabbed and took the victim, this is of public interest,” he said.

Natadra was remanded in custody.

The case has been transferred to the Lautoka High Court on July 14 for mention.
