Stakeholders have praised Government’s initiative for finally addressing Nadi’s drainage problems by upgrading Nadi River’s associated problems

Attorney-General and Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said during the 2017-2018 National Budget announcement that Government was going to widen and rehabilitate the Nadi River.

During his Budget address, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the feasibility study report on the Nadi River, sponsored by the Japanese government, estimates the cost at $385 million over a three-year period to widen and rehabilitate the river.

This includes the building of infrastructure like levees and three bridges.

“This project has been long ever due,” Tui Nadi Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci said.

Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Dr Ram Raju also welcomed the move.

We are happy to note that the project is finally coming through, he said.

Nadi resident, Ronnie Chang said: “Nadi River’s associated problems included the uncontrolled environmental degradation with household and similar refuse from settlements all along Nadi’s river system.

“Most settlements near and outside municipal council boundary have little or no proper garbage disposal available to them,” he said.

“Nadi’s ever-growing developments must now go hand-in-hand with addressing flooding; drainage; garbage disposal.

Furthermore he said Nadi still does not have its very own dump site for garbage.

“Nadi thanks friendly neighbour Lautoka in assisting us in this regard.

“They do tremendous help in this regard.”
