St Mary’s Sets Pace In School Cleanliness

Saint Mary’s Primary School’s strategic location sets the pace for other institutions to keep their environment clean.

Labasa and Savusavu Special Administrator Vijay Chand made the comment yesterday while launching the Clean School Competition.

He said SMPS’s environment creates a direct impact on the entire community as it is situated at the town end as you enter Labasa.

The town has embarked on this initiative to encourage students to keep their environment clean.

“This occasion marks a milestone achievement in terms of ownership by an institution to keep a school clean and create awareness of waste minimisation in schools, homes and the communities,” Mr Chand said.

He said the Clean School Programme has been organised to introduce the 3R centric system to schools.

The system’s objective is to give the opportunity for schools to start proper waste management.

“Amongst the 3Rs, it is important to ‘Reduce’ the items we consume, not to generate waste. Then we can think of ‘Reuse’ before throwing away the waste.

“The last ‘R’ means ‘Recycle’ to prevent the waste going to the landfill and we should remember that the process of recycling still needs energy and cost.”

Meanwhile, the initiative is a partnership with the Labasa Town Council which will see that the school gets the necessary attention to make it competitive in the Clean School Competition.
