Mission accomplished, says Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor yesterday.

This was after the Vodafone Flying Fijians beat Tonga 14-10 at the 2017 Pacific Nations Cup/ 2019 Rugby World Cup qualifiers at the Teufaiva Stadium in Nuku’alofa yesterday.

Speaking from Nuku’alofa last night, O’Connor said the goal was for the Flying Fijians to finish as Oceania’s No.1.

“Once we’ve achieved that we can now turn our preparation towards the 2019RWC in Japan,” he said.

“The boys were able to handle the pressure and it just reflected on how well they’ve prepared for the qualifiers. To finish as the top team in the Oceania region is a proud moment for Fiji.”

The Flying Fijians points came from the boot of first five-eight Ben Volavola who slotted in three penalties while their lone try came from Leone Nakarawa.

The Flying Fijians now join Australia, Wales, Georgia and a qualifier from the Americas – either Canada or Uruguay- in Pool D at the World Cup as the Oceania No. 1 qualifier and the second team after the United States to emerge from the qualifying process.

Samoa will host the Akapusi Qera-led side at Apia Stadium on Saturday and remain in competition with Tonga for the Oceania No. 2 qualifying position which would send them to the World Cup in a pool currently comprising of England, Argentina and France.

The third team from Oceania will compete in a repecharge against a European team for a place in Japan.

The Flying Fijians are enjoying an outstanding season in which it has beaten Italy and Scotland before qualifying for the World Cup.
