Former Minister for Education, Mahendra Reddy says the Budget allocation for the education sector reflects Government’s effort in providing unhindered access to the education.

Approximately 22 per cent of the total Budget has been allocated for education.

The Minister’s guideline for small developing countries is that at least 40 per cent of the overall budget should be allocated or dedicated to education.

“Our Government has allocated 22 per cent of the entire budget towards education,” Mr Reddy said.

“Why would Government allocate such a large amount given that there are many other demands for the limited amount of resources that the Government may have?” he asked.

He said the allocation by the Government for education demonstrated not only the recognition of the importance of education towards realising the national aspirations but also the recognition that every person must have unhindered access to education.

It also reflects the amount of work needed to raise the platform of education in Fiji, he added.
