The newly-proposed Ministry of Environment will be responsible in protecting Fiji’s natural environment. This includes strengthening of environment protecting policies and promoting the environment protection agenda amongst the citizens.

The assistant Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment, Lorna Eden yesterday put before the Parliament members, the prospects of the newly-proposed ministry. The ministry will take a three-pronged approach for the fiscal year 2017-2018.

“Firstly it will facilitate and support a strong community outreach to all citizenry groups including businesses, on the environment protection agenda and regulatory obligations and its importance,” Ms Eden said.

Additionally, its radical role played in the economic growth through the green and blue sectors-creating greater Green investment more jobs and Fiji’s competitiveness on the global arena, she added.

Secondly, the aim will be to establish an enhanced coherent effective and robust regulatory and compliance system. “This would be to support outreach and awareness while ensuring strong monitoring and reporting systems.”

Thirdly the ministry will strengthen existing 3R Reduce, Reuse and Recycle to establish a stronger waste management and pollution control strategy for Fiji. Ms Eden also said that Cell One of the Naboro landfill was completed in September last year to a total cost of $2.272 million.

And the budget allocation for 2017-2018 will cater for Completion of Stage 2 – Cell 2 and construction work is envisaged to be completed by December 2017. A national biodiversity action plan will also be implemented under this ministry to protect the wetland system.

The ministry will extract quantified and tangible picture linking conservation with climate resilience.
